HOUGHTON — More than 30 members of the local ski community showed up Saturday morning to help shovel snow on the Michigan Tech Trail.
Michigan Technological University's Nordic Ski Team is scheduled to host the NCAA Midwest Regional Ski Championships on February 24th and 25th. Some members of the MTU ski team, cross country team, and race organization staff spent several hours finding clean snow. A forest placed on the race course.
Nearly 100 inches of snow has fallen in some areas of Houghton County this season, but recent warm weather has left some areas without snowpack, leaving bare ground.
Volunteer crews divided into groups and covered the bare edges and edges of the trails with snow.
The 15-mile ski trail is typically well over a foot deep at its trail base at this point in the winter. In order to protect the limited amount of snow left, most maintenance has been suspended recently. Aside from a few trail systems in the Upper Peninsula, the rest of the Midwest's Nordic ski trails are limited to trails that receive snow this winter.
