Washington —Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen will visit Detroit on Wednesday to highlight the Biden administration's efforts to support small businesses in Michigan and across the nation.
Yellen, who frequently travels overseas to promote the Biden administration's economic policies, comes at a sensitive time for the president.
The president's recent campaign stop in Warren featured a split screen showing Biden's support and opposition in Michigan. He spoke at the United Auto Workers hall on February 1, a week after the union endorsed him in the 2024 election. Meanwhile, protesters demonstrating outside calling for restrictions on Israel's troop numbers and a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Yellen will appear at several events to promote three signature bills passed under the Biden administration: the Control Inflation Act, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act, and the CHIPS and Science Act.
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is scheduled to join Yellen for an early afternoon debate at her first stop, the Detriot Economic Club.
Yellen will then visit Michigan Central, an economic development campus housed in a former passenger train station in Detroit. There she tours her Newlab, her incubator for startup businesses focused on transportation and mobility.
Following her tour, Yellen will participate in a roundtable with U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow and local entrepreneurs and business leaders.
Yellen's visit is expected to end with remarks about the Biden administration's efforts to promote small business growth and celebrate what has been dubbed the “small business boom” in the U.S. economy. Senator Stabenow is also scheduled to speak.
Ahead of her visit, Yellen's press secretary cited recently released statistics, saying, “16 million new business applications were filed in the first three years of the administration, and each of those years was more than any other year on record. “More applications were submitted.” by the White House.
Yellen recently visited Illinois and Wisconsin as well. Her last visit to Michigan was in September 2022, when she spoke at Ford's Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn.
