Infants and toddlers were the main focus of the second-ever free parenting course held at the New Heights Community Resource Center.
This course was a collaboration between the United Way of West Alabama and the Tuscaloosa Latino Coalition.
Parents were given tips and insights for parenting children under five.
The free parenting course was part of Read, Set, Grow! Within the Success by 6 program.
It was created to help families learn about child development skills and the various resources available in the Tuscaloosa area.
This is the first of three sessions, the next ones will be held on February 17th and 24th.
Participants received free breakfast, lunch, child care, books, and gift cards.
This course was offered in three different languages: English, Spanish, and the Mayan language Acateco.
More than 30 volunteers helped interpret the course for families from a variety of backgrounds.
And while the parents were attending the parenting course, the participating children were participating in a variety of activities.
“They could run around, draw pictures, read books. Kids don't always understand it, but I think it's great for kids to be kids.” I think so,” said Razette Wright, a volunteer at the event.
Also, one interactive activity gave caregivers the choice of using their own baby or using a doll to practice talking to the baby.
The importance of talking to your baby at an early age and even while still in the womb was emphasized many times.
Doing this simple thing has many benefits for young children, including a huge increase in their vocabulary.
Upcoming Saturday sessions are scheduled for a yoga session, a children's magician, and a celebration on the final course on the 24th.
