KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – A young Kansas City entrepreneur created a tiny key chain that made a huge impact across the nation. At age 13, Quinton Smith took his keychain business to the streets at the Chiefs' victory parade, and his business took off from there.
“3D printing is fun for me, so I like 3D printing things and keychains,” says young entrepreneur Quinton Smith.
Perfectly designed and printed, Smith creates each key chain with love. He started making keychains for his classmates in his fifth grade and hasn't stopped since. He has used his talented hands to build his 3D printing business from the ground up.
“Before all this happened, my business was looking pretty good. I used to get a few orders, maybe a week or so, and now I'm basically getting about five orders a day. ” said Smith.
Smith made a profit of $300 on a custom-made Chiefs keychain from the Super Bowl victory parade. The keychain is designed with the fan-favorite jersey number and a little something for the Swifties. His mother Julie says proud is an understatement.
“Who would have thought that just the smiles and excitement of people would be like, keychain, keychain? But it's just really making a difference,” she said.
Proceeds from key chain sales will be donated to local hospitals. This is a cause near and dear to the heart of Julie Smith, who received care at Children's Mercy during the difficult birth of her youngest son, Zeke.
“His birthday was September 11th, and everyone always said, he came seven weeks early, he came on this day, and on this day we gave hope to this world.” “Because I needed it,” she said.
Keychains become part of a family's random act of kindness, bringing joy to the recipient. Their reach extends to Germany, but it all started with a Facebook post by someone named “Lynn Weirdwolf Schmidt.”
Schmidt shared a photo of the Chiefs Kingdom keychain he received at the parade on his page. The post received hundreds of likes and responses.
“I was emailing Lynn Weirdwolf this morning and I said a lot of big things are happening because of you, and he said no, it's not my fault, it's happening because of Q's kindness. I said it was, and it's true.''
