Meerut: At the age of 22, Tulika Mishra suffered 53% burns when a falling solvent bottle touched a candle while she was painting. Doctors told her husband that her chances of survival were very slim, and her prognosis sent her into a deep depression that prevented her from picking up a paintbrush again and pursuing her artistic career. It would be a long time before I could resume my life. “In 2000, when I was painting in an art workshop, the solvent from which I had washed my brush fell on my clothes and touched the candle flame. It spread in the workshop and my husband Ajay Mishra managed to rescue me. I lay in bed for about six months in bandages. I couldn't even move my hands. The doctors said my chances of survival were very low. This traumatized me so much that I fell into severe depression,'' Tulika said. After her first exhibition in Delhi, tragedy struck when Mishra was just beginning to gain recognition in the art world. “It took quite a while to start over after this long hiatus. I had to face my fear of using paintbrushes and solvents again, but in 2003 I joined a private school as an art teacher. I joined the company,” she said. A few years ago, the artist started an MSME business, 'Canvas by Tulika', after receiving a loan under a government scheme. Now, 46-year-old Mishra has clients both domestically and internationally. On the occasion of International Women's Day, she was felicitated by Meerut Commissioner Selva Kumari J on Thursday, said Deependra Kumar, Additional Commissioner, DIC Meerut.
