SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) – Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno and his reaction to shots fired at Cytech High School Monday afternoon.
Mayor Sarno said the important thing here is that things could have been much worse. He said security cameras and the quick response of police officers inside the school prevented the situation from escalating, adding that fortunately no one was shot or injured.
“It's absolutely despicable for students to have these adults in our buildings, where we have a relatively safe school system, and that's because we have every safety precaution in place and are proactive about it,” Mayor Sarno said. Ta.
Two suspects with prior criminal records were arrested and their vehicle captured, but the other two adults involved remain at large.
“We hope that some of the judges in our court will send a message that this type of behavior by outsiders who have invaded schools to harm children cannot and will not be tolerated. I hope and pray,” he added. Mayor Sarno.
Mayor Sarno said there will be repercussions for the students who let these adults into their school buildings. Tuesday also emphasized that there will be counselors available for both students and staff, as well as what the mayor called an “adequate police presence.”
