A young woman recently went viral on TikTok when she shared a glimpse of her minimalist home and why she loves it so much. In a video shared in January under the username @notlikemymother, the author answers the question, “Why are we so obsessed with minimalism?” She is first seen loving her new minimalist living room, which features only a wooden table surrounded by simple black chairs and a small vase of flowers to complete her look.
Later in the clip, she digs into why she's “obsessed” with this simple aesthetic and references her “childhood home.” She shows us what her old room looked like, with multiple messy drawers filled with old cosmetics, papers, and even a few half-empty toothpaste containers.
A simple house is not only a matter of taste, but may also be a matter of convenience. A study shared by the Pew Research Center shows that today's young people are experiencing more financial hardship than their parents ever experienced.
More than 72 percent of young people find it harder than older generations to save money for the future. 71% find it difficult to pay for college. And about 70 percent save for housing. Additionally, 39 percent of young people find it more difficult to find a job today, and more than 46 percent find it difficult to find a spouse or partner.
The video quickly went viral on social media, gaining viewers from across TikTok. It has received more than 23.2 million views and 2.4 million likes on the platform so far.
One user, Abaka, commented, “A house isn't a home without a junk drawer. If not 20, then just one.”
Dtay153 wrote: “I love being able to wipe down flat surfaces without having to remove the 35 Precious Moments figures.”
Hiland-Grace added: “I love a clean, minimalist home! Too much stuff drives me crazy!”
