One woman's recent parenting dilemma ended in a hospital visit and a shouting match with her mother-in-law. And of course, a trip to “Am I The A—hole?” (AITA?)” Find out who’s at fault in the subreddit. The mother who first posted (or “OP” in Reddit parlance) explained that she has a 16-year-old son, Joe, and a 5-year-old son, Josh.
situation
She was unexpectedly called into work on a Saturday and didn't have time to find a sitter, so she asked Joe if he could watch Josh for four hours until his father got home. To sweeten the deal, OP paid him his $100 (not too shabby!) and told him he could have two friends over to the house while he watched Josh.
“His two close friends are basically my nephews and we've done this before and everything went well,” OP said. “I ordered pizza for all the kids and left for work after Joe agreed.''
Friends, food, and $100?! All to see a 5 year old? That's easy, right? Hmm, you can see this went south right away.
what happened?
When OP’s husband got home, he called her in a panic and said he needed to take Josh to the hospital. Ms. OP happens to work in her OB department at that hospital, and she soon met them there, where she learned that her youngest child broke her arm in two places. .
Damn.
“I asked what happened and found out that Joe left Josh alone at home while he went out to smoke weed with some friends,” OP said. “Josh pulled a chair against the counter to get a snack and fell, hitting the chair in the process.”
Double fucking.
When OP, husband, and Josh got home, Joe was “nowhere to be found.”
Triple shit.
Did Aita ground her son who left his brother home alone to get high with his friends?

“We found him at my mother-in-law's house. To be honest, I tore him into a new one and locked him out of everything,” the OP said. “My MIL steps in and lets Joe babysit, then yells at me for firing him because 'he doesn't know any better and is too young to babysit.' I decided that it had arrived.”
OP's MIL then called her an “unfit mother” and wouldn't allow Joe to leave with his parents. That's definitely not the way things are going to work out…but OP allowed him to stay at grandma's so everyone could spend the night to calm down.
“I'm being told I'm wrong because at the end of the day, it's my fault,” OP said. So was she wrong to leave Joe under Josh's watch?
Reddit reaction
Reddit has no problem stoning this stoned teen for his actions. Really? For $100, you can't just light it up later. actually please look Kindergarten children Is it your care? No one buys MIL's BS. If you're 16 years old, you can definitely handle having your girlfriend babysit your brother for 4 hours. And friends, food, and extra funds? Yes, the mother was definitely not the worst person here.
“Your son was careless and his brother was hurt because of it,” was the top comment with 23,000 upvotes. “There should be consequences for him.”
Joe was wrong, and frankly, so was his grandmother.
“It's outrageous for your mother-in-law to call you an unfit mother. I sincerely hope your husband supports you and puts your mother in her place,” said a Redditor. one person said.
“The fact that your husband didn't intervene and left her in her place… And the fact that you left a 16-year-old child there!? It's mind-boggling. My children. My rules. End.”
“All the things his grandma told him about his mother, and I wonder if she knew he smoked pot.”
Reddit users went on and on about how they purposefully babysat at a much younger age because they had enough responsibilities and wanted some extra money. There's no reason to think Joe wasn't the same either.
“Sixteen is the legal age to get a job and drive a car. If you're 16 and can't watch your siblings for a few hours, you'll probably be sent to remedial school.”
“Yes, if he's 'too young to babysit' then he's too young to get a license and drive a car.”
“And apparently he's old enough to get high. 🙄 Grandma, do you have anything to say about that?”
Woof. These are hard truths that both Joe and Grandma should speak, and…well.
