O'Brien played in 111 games during his collegiate career, and the Buffaloes qualified for the NCAA Tournament and NIT twice during his career. He helped lead Colorado to a school-record 26 wins, a berth in the Pac-12 Tournament championship game and a berth in the NCAA Tournament in the 2023-24 season. He played in 35 games, including the final 10 games of the season, starting 19 of them.

The Littleton, Colorado native averaged career bests in points (6.7) and rebounds (3.8) while shooting 45.6 percent from the floor, 37.6 percent from 3-point range and 65.8 percent from the foul line. O'Brien scored in double figures 10 times, including two against Pac-12 teams and one on 5-of-5 shooting from the floor in Colorado's second-round NCAA Tournament win over Florida. He scored 12 points. After the season, O'Brien received the team's Tebo PASS Award, given to the player who best exemplifies the virtues of perseverance, attitude, selflessness and success.
As a junior, O'Brien led the Colorado team in total rebounds (185) and ranked second with a 5.6 average. He led the Buffaloes in rebounds with 12, including 10 of the final 15 games of the season. He started 10 games, including seven of the last 10, and averaged 9.0 points and 8.0 rebounds over the team's final seven games.
O'Brien becomes the second player to join the Yellow Jackets, joining Javian McCollum, a 6-2 guard from Oklahoma State. They join a team rated as the 12th best in the nation and powered by a recruiting class featuring high school prospects. Cole Kirouac is a 6-11 center from Cumming, Georgia who attended Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire for his senior year. , Jaden Mutaf of Bowie, Maryland, a 6-4 guard who also attended Overtime Elite, Dorian Onwuchekwa, a 6-11 center from DeSoto, Texas, who attended Faith Family Academy in Oak Cliff, and Darrion Sutton, a 6-8 forward from St. Louis, Missouri, is joining the Overtime Elite in Atlanta (all stats and information provided by Georgia Tech Athletics).
