Jacqueline Stewart is stepping down as director of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures to return to the University of Chicago, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Wednesday that Museum veteran Amy Homma will succeed Stewart as museum president and director.
Stewart, a noted film scholar and host of Turner Classic Movies, helped steer the Academy Museum through its opening phase and subsequently led the museum, serving as the museum's chief artistic and programming officer from 2020 to 2022. During his tenure, he helped make new galleries bilingual and oversaw the opening of many exhibitions, including Black Cinema, 1989-1971.
Homma has worked at the Los Angeles-based museum for five years, most recently as chief audience officer.
The Academy, which puts on the Oscars, announced several more executive promotions to consolidate teams across the Academy, including the foundation, museums and the Oscars. In May, the academy launched a $500 million fundraising campaign for the 100th Academy Awards in 2028.
“As the Academy evolves, we will bring our teams together to better forge a shared sense of purpose across the organization,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer said in a statement.
The organization also announced that longtime Academy archivist Randy Haverkamp is retiring after 23 years with the organization. Matt Severson will take over as archivist and oversee the collection and preservation efforts of all 23 million items in the Academy's collection.
