- It seems Donald Trump's campaign does not want Joe Biden to withdraw from the election.
- “I think he's doing a good enough job to stay,” Donald Trump Jr. said of Biden's recent press conference.
- According to the New York Times, the Trump campaign is confident that if Biden stays in office, he can win in a landslide victory.
President Joe Biden is still under pressure to drop out of the race after his shaky performance at a press conference on Thursday, but he is gaining some support, and it's coming from Trumpworld.
Former President Donald Trump is set to face Biden in November, but Trump's family and campaign appear to be supporting Biden to remain his opponent.
“I think he's fine to stay. I think the press's mission was to get him out on this, but I don't think they're going to do that,” Donald Trump Jr. said during a livestream on Thursday.
President Trump's eldest son shared his thoughts on Biden's candidacy in the latest episode of his podcast, “Triggered with Don Jr.” It's notable that while Trump Jr. criticized Biden, he also peppered his comments with praise.
“I don't think anybody wants to call this guy at 3 a.m. for an emergency, but he was on the phone for an hour. Almost an hour,” Trump Jr. said midway through Biden's news conference.
“I think he did a better job than I actually thought he would. I don't think it was a great job by any means, but I think it was a great job,” he said near the end of the podcast.
Trump's team eagerly awaits a rematch in 2020
Jonathan Swan of the New York Times reported Thursday that people close to Trump were pleased that Biden had put in a decent performance at the press conference.
Swan wrote that the Trump campaign believes it will now be difficult for Democrats to remove Biden from the nomination list, and remains hopeful that Trump can win in a landslide victory if Biden remains the opponent.
Politico also interviewed a Trump adviser on Thursday who spoke on the condition of anonymity to talk about the campaign.
“The Democrats' worst nightmare is coming true,” the adviser told the outlet. “He may provide enough new material to stave off an insurrection.”
The Trump campaign had already announced its intention to endorse Biden as the candidate before Biden's disastrous debate defeat on June 27.
Trump campaign adviser Suzi Wiles also called Biden a “gift” in a mid-June interview with The Atlantic's Tim Alberta, which was published on Wednesday.
Asked for comment, a Trump spokesman pointed to video of Trump speaking at a campaign event in Florida on Tuesday.
“Despite the Democratic panic this week, the truth is it doesn't matter who they nominate, because we will beat any of them in a landslide victory,” Trump said.
Biden has repeatedly insisted he will not withdraw from the 2024 presidential bid, but his party may not share the same enthusiasm.
At least 16 House Democrats and one Senate Democrat have called on Biden to resign following his poor debate performance.
Some lawmakers, like former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have not explicitly called for Biden's removal from office but have refrained from endorsing him as her party's nominee.
“It's up to the president to decide whether he wants to run or not, and we're all urging him to make that decision, because time is running out,” House Speaker Pelosi said in an interview on MSNBC's “Morning Joe” on Wednesday.
Representatives for Biden did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent by BI outside of regular business hours.
