Welcome to logoff. Today, I focus on revelation of immigration abuse in Guantanamo Bay. This is an ominous development for the Trump administration to increase civil machinery for the deportation of the US.
What's going on in Guantanamo? The administration housed 180 migrants in nearly several weeks before being deported to Venezuela on Thursday. A report from the Washington Post today revealed a horrifying situation while they were there. Based on an interview with immigrants published in Venezuela, the report reveals:
Administration officials said military prisons would house “worst and worst” criminals, but among migrants interviewed among the immigrants, their only known criminal activity was illegally crossing the border. .
What is the overall picture? When Trump announced Guantanamo's plans, executive officials said the fear of abuse at military facilities was misguided. With only a few planned detainees currently housed at the base, the Post's report suggests that abuse has already occurred.
NPR reported Monday that the administration is currently laying the foundation for housing undocumented migrants at military bases around the country.
And so, it's time to log off…
This is all very painful and easy to sink into Doomscrolling. But it does nothing for anyone. So, could I suggest a podcast instead? Perhaps even an outside trip to podcasts and budding spring weather? I really enjoyed this report from the Atlantic during a time when modern humans and Neanderthals lived side by side. Be careful today. Please come back here tomorrow.
