A 10-student team of teens from across Long Island won a competition that asked participants to create a strategic marketing plan.
The group was selected as the winner of Adelphi University's Apprentice Challenge. This challenge asks teams to develop a proposal to make Guac Shoppe Mexican Grill locations eligible for the university's meal plan in a way that is mutually beneficial to the school and the restaurant chain. The winning team consisted of the following members: Benny Biniamin of George W. Hewlett High School in Hewlett; Leah DeVoe of Kings Park High School; Nick Gervasi of Plain Edge High School; Tyler Grope of Wantagh High School; Grace Iadevia of Carle Place High School; Naman Manial of New Hyde Park Memorial High School. Maria Michael of North Shore High School in Glen Head; Mauritshat Murray of Wyandanch High School. Max Scharf of Jericho High School; and Franklin Square's Mr. Anthony Sepe of H. Frank Carey High School.
“The judges were very impressed with the professionalism and creativity displayed by all of the students who participated,” said Shelia Cotton, event coordinator for Adelphi University's Office of Admissions. “Students… demonstrated the ability to work collaboratively as a team under pressure to develop strategic and appropriate ideas to integrate Guac Shop into the university community.”
This year's competition attracted 209 students from 26 local high schools.

Auditorium inauguration ceremony
Oakdale Bohemia Middle School recently held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to rename its auditorium after the late John Michael Lasher, a 1992 graduate and former director of art and music in the Connetquot Central School District.
Mr. Lasher, who passed away in 2019, was also the director of Connetquot High School's wind band, marching band, and jazz ensemble. Additionally, from 2003 to 2009, he served as an advisor for the school's Tri-M Music Honor Society, and is credited with helping create the school's third-grade music performance ensemble.
“John Michael's legacy and love of music and the arts is unparalleled and continues to inspire us all today,” said Vincent Mara, the district's current director of arts and music. Front said.

new makerspace
Babylon Elementary School recently unveiled a new makerspace designed to provide children with opportunities for innovation and collaboration. Students will be allocated time in this space every other week as part of their enrichment classes.
A makerspace in the school library provides students with items such as interlocking cubes and wooden blocks. There are also opportunities to build magnetic tracks and Lego walls.
“I’m really looking forward to seeing our students utilize our new makerspace,” Principal Thomas Keogh said. “We provide an environment where students can learn while having fun and grow intellectually.”

heritage room
The South Huntington School District recently unveiled a new cultural heritage room within its administrative offices to commemorate the district's 100th anniversary.
The room not only displays news clippings and photos highlighting the district's history and accomplishments, but also features an interactive touchscreen that allows users to scroll through old yearbooks dating back to the 1940s. Also featured are three people who have schools named after them: 19th-century Congressman Silas Wood, poet Walt Whitman, and former U.S. Secretary of War and Secretary of State Henry L. Stimson. A portrait of him is also included.
