Walking along the snow-dusted promenade of Davos, the energy of innovation was palpable. Amidst the backdrop of the Swiss Alps, the air buzzed with conversations and ideas as leaders from around the globe gathered to witness the future unfold. In each pavilion I entered, hosted by prominent companies and esteemed research institutions, AI was not just a topic of discussion but a vivid showcase of human ingenuity. In one pavilion, a leading tech firm showcased an AI that could predict market trends with startling accuracy. Each exhibit was a testament to AI’s growing role in our society.
As highlighted by the World Economic Forum, AI’s impact on global trust, governance and climate change was a central theme this year, underscoring its growing influence across all sectors of society.
As I strolled along the bustling promenade in Davos, the air was charged with innovation. I could feel that the sense of optimism was unmistakable, an unspoken agreement that AI was no longer a mere part of our future – it was actively shaping it.

Distracted by shiny technological promises and profits beckoning, we risk overlooking the rising price or forfeiting a chance to guide safe development. For example, AI directed to eliminate disease could rationally calculate that eradicating the human species eliminates illness entirely. Or AI tasked with environmental protection could reshape ecosystems and the climate, indifferent to preserving humankind in the process.

If we cannot rule out AI potentially threatening humanity over the coming decades, ignoring this possibility when making plans seems unwise.
