Jewel spoke candidly about how her approach to parenting her 12-year-old son, Kase, has evolved.
The 49-year-old singer, who recently opened up about her romance with Kevin Costner, revealed in an interview with People magazine on Monday that she has become more “in with” her girlfriend, her only child with ex-husband Ty Murray.
“It's changed over the years,” she said. “I'm more present. I think I've worked really hard to be the mom that I am. It wasn't easy for me to actually be present at first.”
The star also emphasized the importance of providing Kase with psychological support.
“Whether he likes it or not, I'm definitely a teaching mom,” she continued. “I'm the type of mom who likes to explain too much and I might end up on the negative list, but that's who I am. I want to break things down. I want him to understand. I wish I could be a good listener.”
But according to Jewel, their time together doesn't just focus on serious mother-son moments. They also value playful and “silly” interactions.
“If you asked my son what he was like, I think we would laugh a lot,” she explained. “We are very, very, very stupid.
“We're weird. My son and I fight a lot. I never thought I'd be that kind of mom, but we fight every day. It's funny.'
The Grammy winner also shared on Instagram a sweet oil painting by Kase that he created for the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art's new art exhibit, Portal: An Art Experience with Jewels.
Kase's portraits not only celebrate motherhood, but also serve as a record of her son in his current near-teenage stage. ”
“Being a mother is less than what comes after, and that's very sad. So this was a way to deal with my own feelings about my son growing up and the changes in both of our lives.” says Jewel.
Jewell married Ty, a professional rodeo cowboy, in 2008, but the marriage ended in divorce in 2014.
In another interview with outlet magazine Jewel talked to her Although she had a romantic relationship with the Yellowstone star, she denied that romance was behind her current happy state.
“I found love, and I'm not talking about Kevin.” I'm so happy regardless of the guy. It has nothing to do with being in a relationship or not,” she told the outlet.
“I'm just happy,” she insisted, adding, “I'm fine.”
The incident comes after Jewel praised Costner as a “great guy” but admitted that the public's “fascination” with their relationship was “intense.”
It was first revealed that the musician and the Yellowstone actor, 69, were dating in November, six months after he split from ex-wife Christine Baumgartner.
The two have kept quiet about their romance until now, but the artist first spoke about it in a chat with Elle magazine last month.
“He's a wonderful person,” she told the magazine, blushing. '[But] Public interest is certainly intense. ”
