Apple made several major artificial intelligence (AI) announcements on Monday at its annual developer event, Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024.
It was during the AI segment that CEO Tim Cook made a major announcement about Apple's AI ambitions: the company unveiled Apple Intelligence, a personal intelligence system for iPhones, iPads, and Macs.
“We're excited to write a new chapter in innovation at Apple. Apple Intelligence will transform what customers can do with our products and what our products can do for them,” said Tim Cook, Apple's CEO. “Our unique approach combines generative AI with a customer's personal context to deliver intelligence that is truly useful, and we give customers access to that information in a completely private and secure way, so they can do the things that matter most to them. This is AI that only Apple can deliver, and we can't wait for customers to experience its possibilities.”
What does Apple Intelligence do?
Powered by Apple Intelligence, Writing Tools in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia let you rewrite, proofread, and summarize text nearly anywhere, including in Email, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps.
Mail now introduces a new section in Priority Messages that shows the most urgent emails. In long threads, users can view important details with a single tap. Smart Reply suggests quick replies and identifies questions in emails to help you answer them all.
Priority notifications are pushed to ensure the most important notifications are always on top, and similarly, Reduce Interruptions is a new focus that only activates for notifications that require your immediate attention.
The Notes and Phone apps let you record, transcribe and summarize audio, and amazingly, Apple Intelligence generates summaries to help you recall the key points of a recorded call.
Apple Intelligence will power Image Playground, which lets users create fun images in seconds by choosing from animations, illustrations and sketches, and will be built into apps like Messages.
Besides Apple Intelligence, the other five AI-related announcements made by the tech giant were:
(LR) Genmoji, Photos, Siri, ChatGPT integration
1. Genmoji
To take the emoji game to the next level, Apple has launched Genmoji, which allows users to simply type in a description and their own Genmoji will appear.
You'll be able to create Genmojis of your friends and family based on their photos.
2. Upgrade your photos
Apple's natural language will allow users to search for specific photos and videos, such as “Maya skateboarding in a tie-dye shirt” or “Katie with a sticker on her face.”
The newly updated cleanup tool identifies and removes distracting objects in the background of a photo, without accidentally altering the subject.Memories allows users to create stories based on prompts or by simply typing in a description.
3. Deeper Siri System Integration
Powered by Apple Intelligence, Siri becomes more natural, more contextual and more personal to simplify and accelerate everyday tasks, and users can now type into Siri and switch between text and voice.
4. Privacy in AI
Private cloud computing extends the privacy and security of your Apple devices to the cloud, enabling Apple Intelligence to scale computing power and utilize larger, server-based models for more complex requests.
5. ChatGPT Integration
After much speculation about whether it would be integrated, Apple has announced that ChatGPT will be integrated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia later this year. ChatGPT will be available in Writing Tools and Compose.
“Powered by GPT-4o, ChatGPT will be coming to iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia later this year. Users can access it for free without creating an account, and ChatGPT subscribers can connect their account to access paid features directly from these experiences,” the official statement read.
This comes after Elon Musk threatened to ban his Apple devices if they integrated OpenAI at the OS level.
