Kathmandu, February 19: The 8th Election Day is being observed today with the theme 'Successful Elections and Popularization of Election Education'.
This day was broadcast on Falgun 7, 2015 BS to commemorate the day when Nepali citizens were able to vote for the first time in the general elections held in the country.
In his message, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Dinesh Kumar Thapariya said that this day is a day to raise awareness among voters and encourage them to participate in electoral activities by recognizing the importance of elections and voting. He expressed confidence that this would happen. He also called on everyone to make elections a part of our lifestyle.
CEC Tapaliya pointed to the need to make the current electoral system cost-effective through self-restraint and social consciousness, and said that political parties, voters and interests should be encouraged to set spending limits and make monitoring mechanisms effective. He pledged to continue working with them.
At a program held in the national capital on Monday to commemorate this, Election Commissioner Dr Janaki Tuladhar and Sagun Shumshar Rana jointly unveiled the annual souvenir issued by the commission.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Secretary Dr Tuladhar said the country is moving towards adopting the principle of inclusion through elections.
Acting Commissioner Yaghya Prasad Bhattarai said the commission's officers, staff and volunteers involved in the elections are working together to make the elections free, fair and cost-effective.
