Viral clicker game Notcoin has “solved the problem” of getting Telegram users into cryptocurrencies, according to Sasha Plotvinov, founder of Open Builders, the team behind the game.
In January, the crypto game broke records with 20 million sign-ups within 26 days of release. Compared to another popular blockchain-based game called Axie Infinity, which had 2.78 million monthly active users at its peak in 2022, Notcoin has been able to bring millions of users into the cryptocurrency through its games. We showed that it is possible.
In an interview with Cointelegraph at the Token2049 event, Protvinov told the story behind the game, which hit nearly 30 million users in March. The executive said the initial goal was simply to introduce cryptocurrencies to users of the messaging app Telegram. He explained:
“It’s just a problem solved. Or maybe the challenge was on all of us: how do we take users from Telegram to cryptocurrencies? Basically, that was the goal from the beginning. .”
The executive explained that his team spent years researching Telegram's large user base and the TON blockchain, which “had very little action but very good technology.”
After going through this process, the team decided to take an approach that simplified the beginning of the onboarding process. Protvinov explained:
“At some point, you get the idea. Okay. So first you need to remove all the obstacles. Then you can give the users something so that they are motivated to engage with Web3. must be provided.”
Notcoin's co-creator said it has become a very “social thing” with interactions, competitions, leaderboards, and teams. “For a match like this, it's very important. And within Telegram, onboarding users and inviting users is basically very easy,” he added.

Protvinov said this is how the game became a social phenomenon, explaining that 53,000 communities competed with each other to rise to the highest league.
The executive also explained that the team didn't have a marketing budget. It all happened “organically,” he explained, adding:
“94% of Notcoiner comes from referrals. People have invited other people. We call them friends. You can see if you are improving.”
Protvinov also explained that the Notcoin project moves away from the common approach of trying to convince users that they have value. “We just decided. So why not flip it around and be like, 'We're not trying to convince you. Probably nothing.'”
