Free classes to bridge the technology gap
Technology is changing rapidly and just when you think you've got it figured out, isn't a new app or cyber scam popping up? You've completely ignored it, but it's crazy to try to accomplish things without it. Are you feeling more and more irritated?
According to a 2018 study by Reneland-Forsman, a technology gap exists that is characterized by underutilization of digital technology within the older adult population. The world is moving towards more digital services and access, and as a result, many older adults are feeling isolated, dissatisfied, and socially excluded.
In today's world, daily tasks such as scheduling appointments, ordering groceries, refilling prescriptions, communicating with friends and family, and paying bills all inevitably require some form of digital technology.
Not only do you need to keep up with technological advancements, you also need to know how to use it safely. As scammers become more sophisticated, it's important to know what to look for and what to avoid when using the internet, email and mobile devices. What may seem like an innocuous email from a friend or a text from your bank could actually be a damaging scam if you click or enter your personal information.
To support digital literacy and close the technology gap for older adults, Lincoln Land Community College and AT&T are partnering to offer free digital literacy training classes throughout 2024.
Computer Basics (Windows 10) teaches you how to navigate the Windows 10 operating system, use Task Manager to manage applications, find and manage files and folders, save and delete files, and more.
The Cybersecurity Fundamentals Workshop is aimed at people who are interested in online safety and want to protect themselves from scammers and scams. This gives participants confidence when accessing her website, creating passwords, and responding to emails.

Email Basics is aimed at people who are new to email or who want to become more confident in using email. This training uses one of the most popular email platforms, Gmail. Learners will learn how to create their Gmail account and perform basic email functions such as sending, receiving, and replying to emails. Additionally, participants will learn to recognize and deal with spam, organize and delete emails, and search for messages.
In Internet Basics, you can learn about web browsers and search engines, build skills for navigating the Internet, and find tips and tricks for basic and advanced online searches.
The Android and iPhone Mobile Devices Fundamentals class is for people who own or are considering purchasing a new Android or Apple mobile device and want to learn more about its basic features. This helps learners connect, identify common apps, and build confidence in using their devices safely.
“Video Conferencing Basics” is intended for anyone who has experience setting up a personal account online and is interested in video conferencing. Help participants create an account on a popular video conferencing platform (Zoom) and demonstrate the platform's features.
