Some parents book trips with just one child at a time, giving them time to bond and reach new levels of adventure.
Focusing on your surroundings rather than potential sibling rivalry will make the experience more memorable.
CNBC Travel spoke to Sonya Prokopek, a mother who decided to travel abroad with only her 6-year-old son at the time.
Prokopec, who has a husband and three children, recommended the experience as helping her avoid arguments and distractions.
She feels that doing so allows her to be a more present parent.
“My son loves attention and loves being able to explore alone together,” she said.
The two are already planning solo summer trips to make more memories.
She now had her husband on her side, who liked to travel with the whole family.
He now travels alone with his son.
Luxury travel agency Scott Dunn lists these parent-child trips as one of the biggest trends for 2023.
Mother-daughter trips are particularly popular, but father-son trips are also on the rise.
“Father-son duos often choose destinations and incorporate experiences based on their mutual interests,” said Scott Dunn general manager Mike Harlow.
Author Monica Pittorelli recently traveled alone with her daughter and incorporated her child's preferences into her itinerary.
Their trip to Thailand included elephant sightings and a Thai boxing class.
“It was important to me to spend a lot of time with my daughter and not worry about other people's needs,” she said.
Instead of being resentful, my husband spent time at home bonding with his remaining children.
Madeline Austin, who grew up in a large family, still fondly remembers the trips she took with her mother and grandmother as a child.
She recalled how her own passions became central to her travels, such as when she visited Yellowstone National Park after writing a school report about the region's wildlife.
As the middle child, she especially appreciated the focused attention.
Although she is not yet a mother herself, she hopes to repeat this experience with her own children someday.
āItās a very special time to connect one-on-one with your child in a way that you canāt recreate at home,ā she said.
