A new study has found that the majority of American men are self-conscious about their own scent.
A poll of 2,000 millennial men in the United States found that 72% of men are concerned about their body odor.
Body odor has been found to weigh heavily on men's minds, with 52% worried they have body odor but don't realize it. Almost the same number of people (51%) are concerned that they don't know how to fix their body odor. Still, 59% say they want someone to tell them if they have bad body odor.
The body parts that men are most concerned about when it comes to odor are their armpits (71%), neck (40%), head and hair (39%), arms (30%), and hands (25%).
Meanwhile, body parts that men felt were “important” to smelling good included their hands (25%), chest (21%) and even their groin (15%). 7 in 10 (71%) said their armpits are especially important for keeping them smelling good.
The survey, commissioned by Old Spice Total Body Deodorant and conducted by OnePoll, found that three in four people are concerned about smells lingering on their clothes after they take them off.
Almost half (48%) have even canceled plans with friends because they felt self-conscious about smelling. In fact, 51% of men think it's okay to be late to an event as long as you smell nice.
Men shared situations in which they feel most likely to stink, such as during their first sexual experience with a new partner (34%), during a job interview (18%), or after a workout (11%).
Similarly, they believe the most important opportunities to smell good are during the first sexual experience with a new partner (35%), during a job interview (19%), and on a first date (18%). I am.
The results also showed that men would apply more deodorant (62%), change their clothes (49%), or apply powder (45%) if they noticed body odor.
Examples of ways to reduce groin odor include using deodorant sprays (57%), showering more often (53%), and limiting physical activity (49%).
“It's normal to have body odor all over your body, but it's a concern for men who don't really know how to deal with body odor outside of their armpits,” says Procter & Gamble's Old Spice lead researcher for personal care in North America. , says Dr. Mysha Jones. . “Body odor comes from odor-causing bacteria in the folds of your skin, so it's important to address the odor where it comes from and be gentle enough to use it all over your body.”
Nearly eight in 10 (78%) use products to combat body odor at least twice a day, and incorporate an average of three different products into their daily routine to keep them smelling good.
Men also say they feel most confident when a friend (37%) or family member (22%) compliments them on their scent.
One-third have even ended a relationship because of body odor. 35% have broken up with someone because of their scent. Interestingly, 38% said they were the ones who broke up with their partner because of their scent.
