The real estate market is constantly changing, and some unique features are leading the way in 2024.
Pickleball is exploding in popularity across the United States, and pickleball courts are becoming popular items for home sales, Zillow reports.
According to Zillow data, the keyword “pickleball” has skyrocketed in popularity when compared to the descriptions of nearly 300 home feature listings a year ago.
Amanda Pendleton, Zillow's home trends expert in Seattle, said pickleball is a highly social sport, making home courts the newest and greatest entertainment center.
Zillow reports that pickleball mentions nationwide are up 64% compared to last year. In New York City, Zillow's StreetEasy has seen a 100% increase in properties for sale touting homes close to public or private pickleball courts.
“Real estate agents are seeing homeowners using portable nets to turn their driveways into courthouses,” Pendleton said. “Some agents say players with super high-end homes are painting new pickleball lines on sports courts and tennis courts.”
Pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis and can be played indoors or outdoors. It is played on a badminton-sized court using a paddle and a plastic Wiffle ball. According to the United States Pickleball Association, the sport is “easy to start, but hard to stop.”
Pickleball originated in Washington State and was invented by three fathers whose children were bored on Bainbridge Island in the summer of 1965. In 2022, Pickleball was declared the official sport of Washington State. Celebrities who are pickleball enthusiasts include LeBron James, Bill Gates, and Marshawn Lynch.
NFL star (and Taylor Swift endorser) Travis Kelce has reportedly purchased a 17,000-square-foot property in Kansas City that features a pickleball court in addition to a pool and mini-golf course.

cold plunge pool is hot
Zillow also reports that cold plunge pools are a hot trend for 2024. The share of Zillow listings featuring residential cold water plunge pools is up 130% compared to last year.
Cold water immersion is widely practiced among athletes and is thought to be effective in reducing inflammation and stopping muscle soreness. The popularity of the New Year's Day Polar Plunge has exploded as more people have adopted the habit.
Pendleton said built-in cold water plunge pools are typically seen as a feature of high-end homes, but there are now an increasing number of portable plunge pools on the market.
“From large plug-in models to inflatable plunge pools, everyone can benefit from cold plunge pools at all price points, making this wellness trend more accessible than ever,” she says. Stated.
