ST. AUGUSITNE, Fla. — Neighbors in San Marco are concerned that a proposed development would not only bring commercial developments too close to residential buildings, but would also bring them closer to historic buildings.

The proposal would place office and warehouse space along St. Augustine Road next to the Phillips Craig Swamp Cemetery, which has cemeteries dating back to the 1860s.
“For us, it's not just the aesthetics, but also the noise and traffic in the neighborhood,” neighbor Jeremiah Bowser said. ” [gravesites] It has a history of over 100 years and is worthy of attention. I know that people related to the people buried here would probably protest this if they were nearby. ”
The city's planning department took note of some of the concerns after initially rejecting the recommendation. The commissioners claimed that they violated the comprehensive plan and invaded a residential area.
However, the Planning Commission voted to approve the recommendation. Members said all commercial activities will be indoors and there will be no impact on residential areas.
“There are probably a lot of other properties that are already zoned for that kind of use, all up and down St. Augustine Road and not right next to residents,” Bowser said.
Representatives for the developer said the building would be one-story and respectful of the neighborhood, and that the cemetery would serve as a natural buffer to other homes along St. Augustine Road.
Others mentioned Craig Creek drainage issues. The developer said all of that will be scrutinized during the permitting process.
The Land Use and Zoning Commission would have to approve the rezoning from low-density residential to business park. Council members voted to postpone Tuesday night. Another date has not yet been decided.
