Have you ever heard the story about Keith Griffith II, the founder of Louisville's raw honey company Beeing2gether? Through his honey business, he not only raised enough money to pay for most of his Trinity High School tuition. , and also appears in a new documentary.
Griffith is a Louisville high school student and entrepreneur who also stars in the new film he directed, “The Beekeeper.” “Beekeeper” depicts the life lessons Griffiths learned from caring for bees and starting a business.
“I wanted to make this movie because there is a story that my family and I want to tell,” Griffith said. “As a beekeeper, I learned that bees consistently behave in social ways that benefit the entire hive, even at the expense of the individual.” They are altruistic in nature and are a great example for understanding the importance of symbiotic relationships. ”
This film was made possible in collaboration with ByKids, a production company that gives a voice to young people around the world. The series pairs teenagers from diverse cultures with accomplished filmmakers to create short personal documentaries that educate and promote understanding of global issues.
During the production of “BeeKeeper,” Griffith was mentored by documentary filmmaker Evan Mascagni, a Louisville native.
“Not many people 'get the flowers while the scent is still there.'” What I love about this movie (and Keith's family) is that they are so shy about their love, appreciation, and admiration for each other. “These are models for all of us to understand more deeply the interconnectedness of ourselves, our families, and our planet,” Mascagni said. As they say, “We'd better be Beeing2gether.''
In addition to honey and filmmaking, Griffith has written a book called “Bees and Beekeeping: A Mental Health Miracle.” He also breeds bees in a hive in downtown Louisville. Beeing2gether products are available for purchase online and at Rainbow Blossoms Natural Food Markets.
On Sunday, Feb. 25, Rainbow Blossom will sponsor a free screening of “Beekeeper” at the Baxter Avenue Theater, 1250 Bardstown Road, at 4 and 5 p.m. To register for free tickets, visit RainbowBlossom.com/Beekeeper.
