LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – Twin boys from Fern Creek High School decided to go their separate ways after high school.
Instead of going straight to college, the two decided to join forces and open a brick-and-mortar shoe business.
From editing videos to selling their favorite shoes, Taylan and Tylan Walker started with humble beginnings, but now they want to build a shoe company.
At the age of 13, Tyrann and Tyrann realized they had different purposes in life.
Tyrann discovered a love for cameras and videography, and Tyrann delved deep into his love for shoe restoration and buying.
Together, they found a market in which they could grow.
“Shoes and videos are big markets, especially in these times. People really want the best kicks, the best clothes, the best videos, so we might as well capitalize on that,” Tyran said.・Walker said. “It's best to do it seriously and seriously.”
That love grew beyond their surroundings until their grandmother suggested a change to them.
“When I was at home, I had a lot of shoes. And then I had more and more shoes, until I got to the point where I had too many shoes in the house and had to move them.” With Tyran Walker explained.
The pair had saved money restoring and cleaning shoes and had success in the buy-and-resell market, but the transition to a store wasn't as easy as they thought.
“It was really a little difficult because of the money, paying monthly and getting people together to pay monthly,” Tyran Walker said. “Basically, we just tried to make sure we were selling the best kicks and the newest shoes.”
So they turned to social media.
They used Tylan's business knowledge and Taylan's video and editing skills to push their brand into something people wanted to check out.
“The only thing that matters is being consistent, like anything you do, be consistent,” Tyran Walker said. “So if you stay consistent, you can really become whatever you want.”
They don't just sell shoes. The two say they want to help build their community one person at a time.
“We give back to the community by having people young and old walk past our store from time to time,” Tyran Walker said. “If we see them in trouble, we throw a shoe at them. We just want to give back.”
And while they're still growing their clientele and expanding into clothing and accessories, they feel there are limits to what they can accomplish.
“I think we're expanding into other locations, maybe even malls or bigger locations or even different states, to get more exposure,” Tyrann Walker said.
