Anthony Starr reveals more about Homelander's strange parenting skills in The Boys season 4.

“How does Homelander view his role as a father?“I think it's funny, I've only just realized recently how selfish he's been about this. I've always looked at it as a desperate need for connection.” In season three, the climactic episode saw Homelander beg his father, Soldier Boy, for approval. Homelander has also shown himself to be very protective (to a degree) of his son Ryan, but Starr said this is hardly good treatment for anyone in The Seven. “This season, if you look at it through a certain lens, It's very selfish and about inheritance and what he wants for his son.” he added.And it's a very controlling way of parenting.”
Homelander is unfit to play the father
Starr acknowledged that deep down, Homelander cares about Ryan, but Superman's inner conflict keeps him from being an effective father. “There's a very pure love there, but it's mixed with some really horrible parenting choices,” he said. “He's not going to be dad of the year, but he's interesting to watch and he's really good.” Starr says the story gets even more complicated in Season 4, as Ryan starts to see Butcher as a father figure. “What's really interesting is that it puts Ryan in an interesting position of reaching out to Butcher, and there's a lot at stake in that,” he asserted. “It's an interesting season because there's a lot at stake for him in that.”
