Welcome to logoff: The Trump administration moved to deport eight men to South Sudan after a federal judge in Boston said it was “undetected” a violation of a court order.
what happened? On Tuesday, the US government has no chance to speak with minimal notice and to lawyers for deportation flights to South Sudan, a precarious country in South Africa. The exact location of theirs is now unknown.
What has the court ruled on deportation? A court order from April issued by the same federal judge, Brian Murphy, prevented the Trump administration from deporting immigrants to their own country without a due process, as they could face violence and death there.
What happens to immigrants who have been deported? Murphy ordered the government to keep the man in US custody, considering ways to secure legitimate process rights, but will not return to the US. Murphy also raised the possibility of criminal contempt sanctions for officials involved in deportation.
What is the context? This is not the first time the Trump administration has attempted to deport a dangerous third-party country. Not only did the administration send Venezuelan immigrants to the brutal MegaPrisons in El Salvador, but Boston federal judge Murphy also stepped in early May to block deportation flights to Libya.
What does this mean for Trump's immigration plan? The Trump administration is almost certain to continue testing the limits of what immigration can do. In an interview released today, Vice President JD Vance raised the illusion of more conflict, claiming that he “literally sees an effort by the court to overturn the will of Americans” regarding immigration enforcement.
